Kathryn Bruns, CPA began her tax career with the NJ Division of Taxation as an auditor. Her focus was mostly on cash businesses, where creative techniques were used to fairly assess under-reporting taxpayers. Kathryn then moved into public accounting, focusing on a wide variety of taxes. She began specializing in multi-state tax at PriceWaterhouseCoopers, finding it interesting and challenging. For the next several years, Kathryn was a key state tax professional in large public accounting firms and within national corporate tax departments. She would identify and monetize refund opportunities, as well as take a poorly run or nonexistent state tax function and create a value-add, efficient process that subsequently could be handled at a lower cost. Kathryn seeks to bring her multi-state tax expertise to clients on a project basis. See below for more specific project information
STATE APPORTIONMENT DATA
Includes review and maintenance of apportionment data tailored to the client's specific industry. Kathryn has a template for all states that can be customized for the client and used for compliance and planning purposes.
STATE COMPLIANCE
Includes tax return review (separate, combined, unitary) of corporations and partnerships (withholding and composite tax), addressing notices and other tax correspondence, and any other routine state tax work.
STATE TAX SAVINGS AND REFUND OPPORTUNITIES
Includes review of past returns in search of opportunities to amend returns and request refunds. Prospective changes may be available to apportionment, or to filing method (separate return to combined, consolidated, or unitary return).
STATE NEXUS ANALYSIS
Includes review and analysis to determine if there are any missing tax filings or unnecessary filings. Materiality is considered so that the appropriate pros and cons can be measured.
STATE TAX RESEARCH AND SUPPORT
Includes attribute calculation and tracking (NOLs, credits), state tax impact of proposed transactions, due diligence, and any research of the state tax statutes, regulations, cases, and other guiding authority.
STATE TAX AUDITS
Includes oversight of tracking and document requests. Audit results will be reviewed to ensure any assessments are minimized or eliminated. Initial assessments can often be turned into refunds.
