IRS says "no more checks"

Hi clients and friends, it's been a while since I wrote a tax piece. Time's just flying on by and summer is pretty much here....

Have you heard about the IRS doing away with checks? This means both issuing checks and accepting payment by check. The plan is to implement this starting September 30.

Note that there will be some exceptions to the "no-checks" policy. Specifically for:

  • those without access to electronic payment services

  • certain "emergency situations..."

  • certain "national security or law enforcement..." activities

  • "Other circumstance as determined by the secretary of the Treasury..."

These exceptions make it seem like checks may not go away after all. It will be interesting to see if this actually plays out in a material noticeable way. However, if you currently deal with the IRS in checks, I suggest to be prepared for the possible change.
